Low Glycaemic Fruits
- Grapefruit – straight after cherries we have grapefruit with GI 25. This fruit is rich in vitamin C. However, if you are following a keto diet, you should watch out for net carbs amounts as grapefruit as many other fruits is high in carbs and bigger amounts can take you out of ketosis. 100 grams of pink or red grapefruit have 11 grams of carbs.
- Dried apricots – this fruit has a great nutritional value and GI 32. Dried apricots contain vitamins A and E and mineral copper. Vitamin A is important for our vision. Vitamin E plays a significant role in reproduction function. Copper is essential for brain development. If you are on keto, you should eat dried apricots in a very strict moderation, as 100 g of them have 63 grams of carbs which exceeds the daily carbs limit of 50 grams in order to remain in ketosis. You can have 30-50 grams of dried apricots a day if you eat very low carbs from other foods.
- Pears – this fruit has GI 38. Pears are rich in fiber, vitamin C, copper, potassium and folate. Vitamin C is important for the body’s healing process. Potassium helps muscles to contract and supports normal blood pressure. Folate or vitamin B9 during pregnancy reduces risks of birth defects. 100 grams of pears have 15 grams of total carbs. Grapefruit and pears are better for a keto diet than dried apricots.
- Apples – apples are one of the best fruits from different points of view. Eating an apple makes the body burn more calories than we consume while eating this fruit. Apple GI is 39. Apples are rich in fiber and vitamins. They are also low in carbs and perfect for a keto diet. 100 grams of apples have only 14 grams of carbs. Apples are rich in vitamin C and antioxidants.
- Oranges – oranges like other citrus fruits are basically synonyms for vitamin C. The GI of this fruit is 40. 100 grams of oranges have 12 grams of carbs. So they are also keto-friendly if taken in moderation. Oranges are also rich in vitamin A and calcium. Calcium is important for our teeth and bones.
- Plums – their GI is 40. Fresh plums are also keto-friendly. 100 grams of raw plums have 11 grams of carbs (roughly one fifth of your maximum daily carbs intake if you are on a keto diet). Prunes of dried plums however have 64 grams of carbs for 100 grams of dry fruit, so be careful with those, as they can easily take you out of ketosis. Plums as many other fruits have a good nutritional value. They are rich in vitamin C, and also contain vitamins A and K, and potassium.
- Strawberries – yes they are fruits, though commonly called “berries”. The GI of strawberries is 41. They are keto-friendly and an exceptionally good source of vitamin C. Apart from Vitamin C this fruit is also a good source of fiber and antioxidants. They also have folate, potassium and manganese. Manganese is crucial for normal brain and nerves functioning.
- Peaches – GI is 42. 100 grams of peaches have 13 grams of carbs, 5 grams of which is fiber (so 8 grams of net carbs). They can also be considered good for a keto diet. Peaches are rich in both vitamin A and C.
